Comparison of the Antioxidant Effects of Sophora Flavescens Aiton and Beta Vularis Extracts
Jung se-Hoon

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to verify and compare the effectiveness of the antioxidant abilities of BVEE (Beta vulgaris ethanol extract) and SWE (Sophora flavescens Aiton water extract). Both BVEE and SWE showed a high content of total polyphenols and flavonoids. In particular, the content exhibited in SWE was noticeably high. Additionally, electron donating ability (DPPH) was confirmed. When measured by concentration, BVEE was 86.7% at 1,000 ppm of ascorbic acid and SWE was 94.9%. Furthermore, radical scavenging activity (ABTS+), when measured by concentration, was found to be 59.5% for BVEE and 91.6% for SWE. Also, SWE showed excellent levels of DPPH and ABTS+. These results indicate that BVEE and SWE are all natural foods with antioxidant abilities, and should be considered effective against inflammation and chronic diseases.
